Dr Ayalew - Reflection on the 2026 ADAVC Course, Annecy, Franc
I was privileged to participate in the 2026 Advanced Vaccinology Course in Annecy, France, an enriching experience that has significantly expanded my knowledge, skills, and professional network in the field of vaccines and immunization.
The course provided a comprehensive overview of vaccinology, covering fundamental concepts in immunology and vaccine science, vaccine research and development, clinical evaluation, vaccine registration and regulation, immunization policy, program implementation, vaccine communication, advocacy, and emerging challenges in global immunization. Through interactive lectures, case studies, and discussions with leading experts, I gained a deeper understanding of the entire vaccine lifecycle, from laboratory research to delivery of vaccines in communities.
One of the most valuable aspects of the course was the opportunity to learn alongside and exchange experiences with a diverse group of participants from around the world. The cohort included researchers, academics, policymakers, regulators, vaccine manufacturers, public health professionals, and immunization program managers. These interactions provided unique insights into how different countries address immunization challenges and strengthened a global network of professionals committed to improving public health through vaccination.
As someone involved in leading immunization efforts in Ethiopia, I found the course highly relevant to my work. It not only strengthened my technical knowledge but also provided fresh perspectives and practical approaches for addressing current and future immunization challenges. The insights gained will support evidence-based decision-making and contribute to strengthening the planning, implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of Ethiopia's national immunization program.
I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the University of Geneva and the Mérieux Foundation for organizing this outstanding course and creating an inspiring learning environment. Their dedication to building global capacity in vaccinology is making a meaningful contribution to public health worldwide.
I am especially grateful to the Mike Watson Foundation for generously sponsoring my participation. Their support made this invaluable professional development opportunity possible. The knowledge, skills, and networks gained through this course will have a lasting impact on my work and, ultimately, on efforts to protect populations from vaccine-preventable diseases.
I return home with renewed motivation, expanded expertise, and a stronger commitment to advancing immunization programs. I am confident that the knowledge and experiences gained during this course will be translated into practical actions and program improvements that contribute to healthier communities and stronger immunization systems in Ethiopia.
My heartfelt thanks go to the organizers, sponsors, and fellow participants for making this a truly inspiring and memorable experience.
